Why do you think this is happening, and where do you think this comes from?

Is it really a trait you need to get rid of, or did someone just tell you to?

Do you need to work on this or do you plan to accept it? How?

Shadow Work is as much about finding your shadow self and growing from it as it is about accepting and forgiving these parts of yourself.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that we give ourselves permission to keep hurting ourselves or others. Instead, it means that we recognize that we’re human and that we CAN grow.

Deal with feelings and events from the past.

Writing prompts to help you heal your inner child
If you don’t know what to write in your journal about your inner child, I suggest using prompts like the ones below.

In one sentence, tell us about your childhood. Was it happy most of the time? Anxious? Stressful? Sad? Can you think of it?

What qualities did you have as a kid that you still have now? Which traits did you once have but no longer have? What happened? Can you think of it? Have you ever been told to hide parts of yourself that other people thought were “childish”? How do you feel right now?

What’s one thing about your childhood you wish you could change?

How did you get along with your parents when you were young? What’s going on now? What’s different? What do you think about it?

Write about a non-traumatic event from your past and think about how you felt about it. How did you get over it when you were young? Why do you think this is so clear in your mind? How has it made you who you are now?

What would you tell your younger self if you were sitting in front of them right now? What would you do to them? How do they appear? What do you think of them? How does this make you feel about yourself as an adult?

List five things you liked to do when you were a kid.

Where did you go when you were a child to feel safe? Have you got one? How does remembering it make you feel? What does your “safe space” as a child mean to you now that you’re an adult?

List three things you liked to do as a child that you can still do as an adult. How do you think you’ll do it? Do you need to change these activities to make them more suitable? Write it down in your journal.

Think about your favorite movie or TV show from when you were a kid. How did it make you feel? What did you like so much about it? Do you think about it again? What’s the deal? How do you feel about it now?

Who did you look up to when you were younger? Did you have an idol? Why did you admire them? What about them do you wish you had been like when you were young? Do you have them now that you’re an adult?

How did you take care of yourself as a child? What were your favorite ways to learn it when you were young, even if you didn’t know it? How can you use this to take care of yourself as an adult?

Who were you close to as a child, besides your parents?
About them, write. Are you still close? What went wrong?

What are two positive statements you wish you could have told yourself when you were younger? How would you feel if you said them again right now?

What did you want to grow up to do or be? Have you done that yet? Your dream did it change?

When you were younger, how did you deal with your feelings? How did your parents help you talk about how you felt when you were sad, mad, or happy? Were you taught to hold these feelings back?

What do the words “childish,” “immature,” and “like a child” mean to you? What do you think they mean?

Do you find it hard to connect with traits that are often linked to Jung’s child archetype? If so, what are they? How do you feel when you try to get in touch with them?

How can you make yourself feel safe, warm, and cared for today? How can you give yourself time?

Do you find that you share some traits with the old man archetype, also known as the child’s shadow? If so, what are they? Or is it hard for you to get in touch with this part of yourself?

How do you act when you’re in situations that make you feel like a child? How old do you feel when you’re upset or under stress? Did something happen when she was this age that made her act this way later on?

Write about three things you’re thankful for from your childhood.

Write about a time when you were a child and someone let you down. Have you given them a second chance? Or do you carry around that pain?

Write about a person from your childhood who hurt you. They did what? How did you respond and heal, if at all, at the time? What do you think of it now?

What does it mean to you to “forgive”?

What were you afraid of when you were a child? Do you still feel scared? What do you feel afraid of right now? Could there be a connection?

List a few of your favorite things as a child, such as your favorite color, book, season, or food. What’s different about these?

How can you keep your creative side alive now that you’re an adult?

What gives you hope right now?

How can you better plan and organize your days? Do you find it hard to do this? Have you always had a hard time?
