Who is Buddha?
Buddha, (Sanskrit: “Awakened One”), was the founder of Buddhism, one of the world’s major religions and philosophical systems. Buddha was one of numerous epithets of a northern Indian guru from the 6th to 4th century CE.
Buddhists, his followers, spread Buddhism. The term buddha was used by several religious organizations in ancient India and had many meanings, but it became most closely linked with Buddhism and meant an enlightened individual who had awakened from ignorance and achieved freedom from suffering.
According to numerous Buddhist teachings, buddhas have existed and will exist. Some types of Buddhism believe there is one buddha each historical age, whereas others believe all creatures have the buddha nature and will become buddhas.
All Buddhist traditions commemorate Buddha Gautama’s birth, enlightenment, and nirvana. In Southeast Asia, Wesak is the day when the three events are celebrated.
Other regions have distinct celebrations on different days with different ceremonies. These countries celebrate the Buddha’s birth in April or May, depending on the lunar calendar.
In Japan, which does not use a lunar calendar, Buddha’s birthday is April 8. The Hanamatsuri flower festival now includes a native Shintō ceremony.
